Atelier Haute Cuisine

The design collective “Atelier Haute Cuisine” has been founded in 2009 by Bernd Tyskens and Benny Conings. ‘Like cooks we mix different ingredients together so that they can contribute to a greater whole. The outcome can be handmade objects, lightsculptures, furniture, site specific installations and concepts.’ Such as :

The Anonymous Family

This series of light sculptures is created throughout a cooperation with artist Patrick Meylaerts. It’s a family of light sculptures which all differ through their form, size and color temperature, but yet all belong to one specific group. Trying to evoke feelings such as anonymity, freedom, need of interaction and solidarity. The light sculptures get through the day almost unattended but once the sun sets, they radiate, practically demanding their notification.

No Leafs Tree

In this project we strive to create a luminous forest. This forest is formed by fiberglass copies of real trees. We try to capture a moment in time of its life cycle. Each time we search a new tree to base our lightsculpture on. Therefore every piece that belongs to the no leafs project is unique and documented through its photograph and its gps coordinates.
In that way later on you can make a comparison between the captured moment as a light sculpture and the still further growing tree.

Artificial Humans

An artwork made for Amsterdam Light Festival, that is based on a picture created by an AI program. Because the theme of Amsterdam light festival this year is technology and AI, we thought this would be an appropriate way to start the design proces. Especially as one of the results was a picture of a group of humanoids with hunched backs, that gave the impression they were looking at something that could be a smartphone of some kind. The question is, what is AI trying to tell us with this? Are we as a species suffering from the very technology we have invented, are we glued too much to our phones, or are we witnessing the next step in human evolution? To make it our own and create a contrast with the latest state-of-the-art AI technology, we used classic moulding techniques to create fiberglass copies of our own bodies. For the light festival in Amsterdam we distributed 12 of these copies throughout the city wandering the streets.
