GENEVIÈVE ROESELER Belgium, b. 1975

Appearances can be deceiving. Geneviève Roeseler demonstrates this through her oil-on-paper works. An artist’s wild side can lurk in the passion of a few free, uncompromising brushstrokes, in an unrestrained gesture, but also in a bittersweet game of hide-and-seek. Bright, candy-like colors provide a comforting sweetness that stands in stark contrast to the dramatic or strange events unfolding in the background: a woman lying on her back, a meal charred beyond recognition, tanks parading by… There is no violence worse than that which, concealed beneath a cloak of gentleness, emerges from nowhere.
